I have read all 5 of Joseph Pluta’s Friesen Press books but this one is still by far the best. What a beautifully written and heartfelt memoir. He either has a phenomenal memory of what happened in the 40s and 50s or else he researched this book for years. Either way, I wish my first six years were as spectacular as his.
What a heartwarming and genuinely beautiful story! The author’s prose flows nicely and his characters come to life in a way that makes you want to reread each paragraph. The story takes place in Michigan where it actually happened but this is a tale of a family that could have lived anywhere in mid 20th century America. What a magnificent piece of rural and small town Americana.
This is a book written through the eyes of a small child. What a special tribute to his family. I read the entire book in a single evening for the simple reason that I literally could not put it down. All of my friends who also read this book agreed: we all wish we could have had six years of childhood like the time described in this memoir.
“The Best Six Years….” is one of the most beautifully written and one of the most poignant books I have ever read. This is an author worth reading and one we will likely all hear about for a long time!!!
Why this book is not on the Best Seller list is beyond me. It is a classic that should be made into a movie. What a truly moving story of a Midwestern farm family during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Wake up readers! And wake up Hollywood!
This memoir is very enjoyable reading. Having lost his mother when he was a boy, Joe had to grow up in southern Michigan without that maternal influence. HIs writing is sharp and evocative. Knowing that area of Michigan a bit myself made this memoir all the more enjoyable. It is a nicely written, warm book.
I loved Joe’s book “The Best Six Years of Any Life”, a memoir. I also grew up in New Buffalo, MI. at the same time and in the same class as Joe when he went to the elementary school so it brought back many wonderful memories. The experiences he shared were so familiar. New Buffalo will always have a special place in my heart and Joe just confirmed that by sharing his memories. I felt like I had gone back in time. What a wonderful tribute to his parents who I do remember since their farm was not far from where we grew up. Loved the book, Joe. Thank you so much.
This superbly written book will really touch your heart. It is a period piece, set in early post World War II Michigan. From the first paragraph until its dramatic conclusion, the book will captivate readers with a brilliant mix of humor, insight, and sadness. I highly recommend this most entertaining memoir from an author of many previous books.
